POP3 Settings |
Setting up your Email on a program like Outlook, Live or Thunderbird, you have to put in the server settings. These can change from provider to provider so you should be sure to know your settings before you begin. If this is the first time you have set up an account on your program, it should automaticaly open into an account set-up. If this is not the first account you have set up, you will have to go into the accounts and add new account. The first question is usually "display name" or "your name". You can put anything that makes you happy and doesn't embarrass you when people get your Email "Dead-beat" for example. The next question will usually be Email address eg. (user@pentnet.net) Most Email accounts issued by Internet providers are POP or POP3 so you can select this as your server type. At this point it will ask you for the POP server name eg. (mail.pentnet.net). If it is your default account or your only account, it will ask you for the outgoing or SMTP, ours is (mail.pentnet.net) the same as your POP server. Now it will ask for your user-name . It may be the first part of your Email address, the whole Email address or in some cases, it may be something completely diferent. In our case it is the first part of your Email address (user). You can now put in your password and if there is a box, check remember password. Thunderbird, Evolution and Mac, will ask for the password, the first time you send & recieve your mail and give you the option of remember password. Some mail providers including us, require authentication for the outgoing or SMTP server. It is usually the same as your POP server unless other-wise specified by your provider. Microsoft, mail handlers usually provide you with a box to check (same as my incoming or POP). If you want to be able to download your mail to more than one computer, you have to go under advanced settings. Here you will find a place that allows you to keep a copy on server. If you choose this option, remember, your inbox on the server may get full pretty fast, so remember to specify how long it will stay on the server eg. (7 days) or go to your WebMail regularly and housekeep. |
